Return to Meet The Writer

What first attracted you to horror writing?

I’m not sure there was any one moment when I decided that’s where my interests lie.  For instance, I’ve always been a big science fiction fan, and I’ve occasionally gotten my science fiction stories published, but I’ve ultimately been more successful with horror.  Maybe it’s because horror naturally is a more emotional genre, and I’m an emotional person.

Blood Born by Matthew WarnerWhat is your most notable work?

Oh, I’m probably not the one you should ask.  I’m not exactly an objective observer.  Feo Amante complimented my first novel, The Organ Donor, as a “straight-on modern classic of horror” so that was certainly a high-point in my career.  But my latest novel, Blood Born, is also racking up some positive reviews.  In the non-fiction world, I wrote a column for five years for HorrorWorld.org (many of which are collected in Horror Isn’t a 4-Letter Word), and people have told me they really enjoy that book, too.

What are you working on now?

I’m about to start on the novelisation of Plan 9, Darkstone Entertainment’s remake of the classic film Plan 9 From Outer Space.  They recently wrapped production here in Virginia, and it’s a straight-up zombie thriller — with aliens.  Lotsa fun.

Who do you admire in the horror world?

Thomas Monteleone is one of the nicest guys I know, and he’s a great writer and teacher.  He’s always down-to-earth and never stuck on himself.  He’s never let his success go to his head. A good role model.

Do you prefer all out gore or psychological chills?

I like them both.  Blood Born is more in the all-out gore vein, and Eyes Everywhere, my previous novel, was a psychological thriller.

Why should people read your work?

Because I deliver the goods, baby!  But like I said, I’m not an objective party here, so don’t take my word for it.  Book reviewer T.T. Zuma had never heard of me, but here’s what he had to say on Amazon: “I’d never heard of Matthew Warner before purchasing Blood Born, but boy, I am glad that I took a chance on him and picked this book up. Blood Born, simply put, is one fantastic horror novel!”

Recommend a book.

The Locke & Key series of graphic novels by Joe Hill are fantastic.  I can’t wait for the fourth one to come out.
