(0:14:15) In this podcast The Outer Dark presents the second installment of The Outer Dark Symposium on the Greater Weird 2019 beginning with a short introduction by Scott and Anya and readings by Nadia Bulkin (0:21:34), Mike Allen (0:30:50), and Lesley Wheeler (0:41:10). Then listen in to the symposium’s second panel (0:50:50): ‘The Weird in Sword & Sorcery/Sword & Soul’, moderated by Milton J. Davis and featuring Jesse Bullington, Gerald L. Coleman, Nancy A. Collins, Anya Martin, Ian McDowell, and Balogun Ojetade. From the moment that Robert E. Howard first raised Conan’s blade and Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser teamed up for their first adventure, the subset of fantasy that is sword and sorcery has been heavily cloaked in The Weird. This panel will dig deep into this synergistic relationship from the trippy world, mired in contradictions, of Michael Moorcock’s Elric to the transgressive narratives of Alistair Rennie’s BleakWarrior, from the empowered but haunted heroines of C.L. Moore and Tanith Lee to the dynamic Africa-rooted Sword & Soul sub-genre created by Charles R. Saunders and gaining momentum today thanks to Black Panther, a few bestselling authors, and members of this panel. Be sure to check out the Additional Links below for a Sword & Soul must-read list and more!
