“With The Grand Dark, Kadrey uses the gritty setting he knows so well to build a strange new world with characters that are larger than life, facing dangers that sit at the edge of our imagination.”
Now that the Great War has ended, Lower Proszawa celebrates peace as intensely as the distress of the war. A newfound hedonism sweeps the city—the inhabitants gorge themselves on sex, drugs and non-stop parties. It’s all a distraction from the reality of everyday life, the genetically designed pets and war-beasts, the theater where murder is part of the scenery.
Then there’s the plague that’s infecting the city.
Bike messenger Largo may be an addict, but he is also enterprising. He knows the streets and slums. With a beautiful girlfriend, a possible promotion, and plenty of drugs, he still wants more. And maybe he can get more. He’s made a contact with someone who could lift him from the treacherous streets.
Maybe it’s too dangerous to be such a dreamer in a city who is growing darker by the second. There are others who envision a different sort of life, much different than the one Largo dreams about, and they’ll use whatever means necessary to achieve their goals.
Why we’re excited about this book:
Richard Kadrey is a master of dark and urban fantasy who knows the streets like the back of his hand. He is the author of the Sandman Slim series, as well as the standalones The Wrong Dead Guy, The Everything Box, Butcher Bird, Dead Set, and numerous short-stories and nonfiction articles online and in print. With The Grand Dark, Kadrey uses the gritty setting he knows so well to build a strange new world with characters that are larger than life, facing dangers that sit at the edge of our imagination. Chuck Wendig (Blackbirds, Wanderers) says: “Kadrey has written for us a beautiful nightmare—one that’s often eerily familiar—showing a theatrical world set on the edge of war, and losing itself in the shadows of brutality and oppression.” Forthcoming from Harper Voyager, The Grand Dark by Richard Kadrey is available for pre-order and releases 11 June 2019.
