Look Out For … The Hobgoblin of Little Minds by Mark Matthews

The Hobgoblin of Little Minds by Mark Matthews - cover“With his latest novella, Matthews blurs the edges of science and horror with an intimate view of mental illness and patient treatment.”

All Kori wanted was for her father to get better. She suffered through his mental illness, and now he’s disappeared. Breaking into the abandoned Northville Psychiatric Hospital, she’s hoping to find some trace of his whereabouts at the last place he was treated.

In the underground tunnels under the hospital, Kori finds something that’s no longer human.

While still in operation, a psychiatrist went rogue, manipulating mood swings, turning patients into savage creatures hunting by the light of the full moon. Now, only an escaped patient and her child can help Kori, and time is running out for everyone.

Why we’re excited about this book:

Mark Matthews is one of the newer voices on the horror scene, and the last few years have seen him come into his own. A licensed counselor by day, Matthews writes the horror by moonlight, and is the author of All Smoke Rises, On the Lips of Children, and Milk-Blood, and well as the editor of the anthologies Lullabies for Suffering and Garden of Fiends. With his latest novella, Matthews blurs the edges of science and horror with an intimate view of mental illness and patient treatment. John Boden (Spungunion, Walk the Darkness Down) says: “A stunningly daring descent into madness. Dank, dark and scary as hell. Brimming with tragic characters and monstrous villains–think Nurse Ratched by way of Dr. Moreau under the direction of Cronenberg. Proves once and for all that reality is often the strongest fuel for the nightmares burning bright. This one is a belter. An absolute beast!”, and Kealan Patrick Burke (Kin) says: “A wickedly clever take on a well-worn trope, The Hobgoblin of Little Minds explores lycanthropy through the lens of mental illness and shows Matthews at the height of his powers as a cartographer of the many shades of darkness that inhabit human minds. This bleak, Odyssean, and impeccably well-wrought fable proves what many of us have known for quite some time: Mark Matthews is the reigning king of modern psychological horror.”

Forthcoming 28 January 2021 from Wicked Run Press, with stunning cover art by Vincent Chong, The Hobgoblin of Little Minds by Mark Matthews is available for pre-order now.
