“With his debut novel, Wood gives us a story of a woman determined to help her old friend, and steps off into the deep end of an occult nightmare.”
New Orleans native Jeannine LaRue knows about surviving. She lost her whole family during Hurricane Katrina, then suffered extreme sexual and psychological violence, held hostage by the ones who saved her. Deputy Curtis Jones rescued her after being held captive for months.
Now, twelve years later, Jeannine is an attorney, and comes home to New Orleans. Seems Curtis has fallen on rough times … he’s now a trafficker in stolen goods. Curtis found Jeannine’s captors, and killed them. With Curtis charged with murder, Jeannine aims to save him, and exposes a family history of dark magic in union with an evil Haitian god.
Why we’re excited about this book:
R.B. Wood calls Boston home, and is a recent MFA graduate from Emerson College. Wood’s fiction has been featured in SickLit Magazine, HorrorAddicts.net, and the anthologies Shallow Waters and Offbeat: Nine Spins on Song. He is also the host of the fiction podcast, The Word Count Podcast, which features original flash fiction. With his debut novel, Wood gives us a story of a woman determined to help her old friend, and steps off into the deep end of an occult nightmare. Richard Thomas (Disintegration, Breaker) says: “Bayou Whispers is a haunting, touching novel that blends the horrors of everyday life with that of the supernatural. Tapping into the tension and setting of films like Angel Heart and True Detective, this is a hypnotic story told from a place of loss, community, and resolute hope.”, and Todd Keisling (Devil’s Creek) says: “Wood’s Bayou Whispers is a sublime cocktail of horror, supernatural thriller, and urban fantasy, where the mythos of voodoo clashes with the modern day. Fans of Jim Butcher and the Marvel Cinematic Universe will love this.”
Releasing 29 April 2021 from Crystal Lake Publishing, Bayou Whispers by R. B. Wood is available for pre-order now.
