Meet The Writer Interview: Emily Goodwin

Emily Goodwin is an international bestselling author of nine titles, in genres ranging from romance to horror. Emily’s Contagium Series won awards for best horror series, best kick-ass female lead, best gore, best zombies, and best series at the Contagious Reads 2014 Horror Con. Emily resides in Indiana with her husband, daughter, dog, and horses.

What first attracted you to horror writing?

I grew up watching shows like Buffy and Charmed and was very attracted to the scary side of it. Ghosts, demons, and dark magic were terrifying…but so compelling at the same time.

What is your most notable work?

I would have to say Stay, my dark romance, is my most notable work at the moment.

What are you working on now?

I am currently working on All I Need, the companion novel to Stay. The first draft is complete and I’m waiting on beta feedback before starting edits.

How much planning and research do you undertake before writing?

A lot. Before I starting writing Stay, I met and spoke with FBI agents to get a better and realistic understanding of human trafficking. For my Contagium series, I spoke with doctors and nurses to help create a realistic zombie virus, and I tested out many of the weapons used in that series.

Describe your writing routine.

I come up with an idea, I think (okay…obsess) about it for a while, then I start writing. I don’t have anything more concrete than that! Sometimes I make a rough outline, sometimes I make a very detailed outline, and most of the time I just go with it.

Who do you admire in the horror world?

I admire Alexia Purdy. She’s a great horror writer and is one of the nicest people I’ve ever met. She’s very willing to promote others and is always willing to lend a hand to new authors.

Do you prefer all out gore or psychological chills?

I like a little bit of both. I’m not biased towards any; as long as the book is good and holds my interest, it can be about anything.

Why should people read your work?

I’ve been told that I have very well developed characters that seem like real people. Character development is huge for me, and I love character-driven series. I create exciting, scary worlds with people you can relate to.
