“With his debut novel, Godfrey presents a grieving father and daughter trapped in a roadside diner among panicked townspeople and a blood-thirsty body of water determined to swallow everyone in its path.”
Six years ago, Glen Masters’ wife died in a tragic accident. Hoping to reconnect with his teenage daughter Lauren, Glen takes her on a road trip through the Appalachian mountains. That’s where Glen’s fondest memories of his family are. But a quick pit stop to a diner proves to be nightmare fuel when armed men barge in. The men are raving about some mysterious “living water” that apparently attacked some people up the road.
Glen figures these are the rants of drunken lunatics, but soon they find themselves hostages to both the men, and an inexplicably terrifying entity.
Because yes … there’s definitely something wrong with the water, and it shows no mercy.
As panic grows, the diners are witness to a nature-defying being engulfing everything in its path. No help in sight, Glen and Lauren must work with these strangers to find a way to escape, with Glen having to face down his own personal fears with his past before he loses everything.
Don’t let the water drag you down …
Why we’re excited about this book:
Adam Godfrey’s next book is one of the most anticipated titles releasing in 2025. Working in cybersecurity department of the Department of Defense by day, Godfrey applies his twisted imagination to the page at night. The author of the novella Narcissus, Godfrey has short fiction appearing in Shortwave Magazine, among others. With his debut novel, Godfrey presents a grieving father and daughter trapped in a roadside diner among panicked townspeople and a blood-thirsty body of water determined to swallow everyone in its path. James Rollins (Arkangel, The Black Order) says: “Adam Godfrey’s Body of Water grips like a vise. Mystery piles on mystery. Horrors upon horrors. When you think the story is going one way, it veers another, keeping you unsettled and unable to put the story down. Written with an aching level of sympathy and pathos, while tackling what it means to survive trauma and grief, this is far more than a simple tale of watery monsters in the night. It is tour-de-force about what it means to be human in the face of tragedy.”, and Clay McLeod Chapman (Wake Up and Open Your Eyes) says: “Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water … the water gets into you. Adam Godfrey goes for the guts with Body of Water―then the heart―and floods them all, every last chamber.”
Releasing from Sourcebooks Landmark on 23 September 2025, Body of Water by Adam Godfrey is available for pre-order now.
