Early one morning in 1904, Ada Franklin awakens in a grave. She claws her way out and learns her that her lab has been abandoned and her research partner has fled with her life’s work: a method that allows humans to communicate with angels.
Angelic interference keeps the original thirteen colonies from expanding, yet Manifest Destiny is growing stronger in the new century. Control of Ada’s invention could not only converse with angels, but could also command them.
The only person Ada can trust now is her former lover, monstrously altered by the angelic beings they studied together. Now they must pursue the man who betrayed Ada across a country twisted by celestial horror, where contact with the angelic remakes the flesh and the mind. But the closer Ada comes to reclaiming her work, the more she suspects humanity’s greed could prove more terrifying than the divine.
Why we’re excited about this book:
Alex T. Singer is ready to join the growing roster of horror novel debuts for 2026. Singer is the creator of the graphic novel Mirrorverse: Belle, and is one half of Little Foolery (with Jayd Ait-Kaci) with Sfeer Theory, Libertus Rubedo, and Small Town Witch, and has short fiction featured in such publications as Metaphorosis Magazine, Apparition Literature, Pseudopod, and Clarkesworld to name a few. With Singer’s latest, contact with the divine alters bodies and minds, with biblically accurate angels devastating the original American colonies in this horrifying alternate history. Hiron Ennes (Leech, The Works of Vermin) calls Angel Country “Beautifully grotesque, fantastically creative. This book knows what good alternate history should be: unhinged.”, and Nathan Ballingrud (The Strange, Crypt of the Moon Spider) says: “Angel Country is strange and scary, full of weird new ideas that had me laughing with macabre delight. In a field awash with repetition, this is something new. What a surprise. What an absolute treat.”
Releasing from S&S/Saga Press 20 October 2026, Angel Country by Alex T. Singer is available for pre-order now.
