The Top 10 Best Horror Collectibles

You may remember that we recently ran a piece about horror toys and collectibles (if not, go read it here) and in it we promised to run down what are, in our opinion, the ten best collectibles out there. So, in no specific order, here they are:

Jaws: Orca and Quint Diorama
From series 4 of McFarlane’s Movie Maniacs line came this brilliant diorama of Quint’s boat , the Orca, and the moment that Bruce manages to flop himself on board and eat the grizzled old sailor. Quint’s figure can even literally split in half, showing his guts as he finds himself the shark’s dinner.

It’s a definite discussion piece if you have it on display.

McFarlane 3D movie posters
You’ve probably guessed that we’re fans of McFarlane and their horror collectibles, but when they continuously supply quality pieces, you just can’t deny their place in the market. In a simply genius move—albeit one that didn’t last for too long—they decided to recreate the cinema posters of some movie classics in 3D. These included The Godfather, Rocky and Robocop, but for our consideration, they also covered a few horror greats too. Friday the 13th, A Nightmare on Elm Street, Jaws and Alien were all given the treatment. It’s just a shame that this line didn’t carry on.

Freddy Krueger and Jason Voorhees Snow-globes
It’s obvious that the most popular horror films and characters would have the most collectibles covering their exploits, but these are just leftfield enough to be a bit more fun. These snow-globes featuring the Bastard Son of a Thousand Maniacs and the Crystal Lake slasher are basically the same mould and both feature a damsel in distress within the glass ball, waiting to be sliced and diced.  There are other genre specific globes out there for Gremlins, Halloween and Scream among others, but these two are a great example.

Evil Dead Necronomicon Replica
There are plenty of replicas out there, including a hell of a lot of unofficial attempts by very talented artists. There was even a DVD release of the film by Anchor Bay a few years ago which came in a Necronomicon. Either way, if you can track down a decent centrepiece for your library or coffee table, official or otherwise, then you should go for it.

The Thing Spiderhead
John Carpenter’s seminal 1982 shocker, The Thing, has had its fair share of collectibles, not least in the form of action figures, but this spiderhead resin collectible is probably the best of all. A lifesize recreation of the moment Norris’ head detaches and scrambles across the floor, it is equal parts awesome and disgusting. Good luck in finding one!

Jason Voorhees Underwater Figure
Sideshow Collectibles created this brilliant piece that recreates Jason chained underwater in Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood. Sadly, you are advised NOT to add it to your fish-tank as it will poison the water.

The Exorcist Diorama
NECA released a couple of really good Exorcist tie-ins. Firstly a recreation of the infamous spider-walk which came with staircase, but this just about pips it. Reagan in classic pose in her bed, fully possessed as Father Merrin walks beside her. And as a treat, at the press of a button her head spins around to the tune of Tubular Bells!

King Kong Captured Diorama
Another Movie Maniacs creation, this came from series 3 and featured a captured king of the jungle in chains when he is presented to a paying public just as he breaks free.

Zombie Stormtrooper
We know that Star Wars isn’t horror, but if you look around, there is a real subculture for zombifying pretty much anything these days, especially Stormtroopers. This Gentle Giant release captures the feeling perfectly. The Dark Side just got bleak.

Life-size Alien Egg
Got a spare $400-odd lying around? If so, we’ve got the perfect collectible to spend it on.

NECA released this life-size xenomorph egg which comes with eerie LED lights and your very own facehugger. You didn’t need that sofa in your lounge anyway, did you?

And as an added bonus, how about the most bizarre horror related collectible of all? Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle Slashers! Yup, in the 1990s Playmates released a wave of Turtle figures that took the guise of Freddy, Jason, Michael Myers and Leatherface. There are no words…

Of course, there are plenty of other collectibles out there for all tastes and budgets. You may even find that you prefer something handmade by a talented fan rather than something mass produced, it doesn’t matter. Just don’t be afraid to own something that makes you happy.
