Show Notes

The Outer Dark presents an exclusive preview panel on The Future Is Female, Vol. 2: The 1970s, a canon-reshaping Library of America anthology celebrating feminist women science fiction writers, featuring editor Lisa Yaszek, Regents Professor of Science Fiction Studies in the School of Literature, Media, and Communication at Georgia Tech, moderating a discussion with her four student editorial assistants Edeliz Zuleta, Jessica Taetle, Olivia Kiklica, and Josie Benner. The conversation digs deep into the process Yaszek and her team used to select stories for inclusion, as well as editors’ favorites, what they learned about feminism cast through the words of women speculative fiction writers in the 1970s, and how their works relate to and anticipate today’s science fiction, gender issues including trans identities, and contemporary and future Earth society. Authors discussed include Lisa Tuttle, Joanna Russ, Chelsea Quinn Yarbro, Connie Willis, Miriam Allen deFord, James Tiptree Jr./Raccoona Sheldon, Vonda N. McIntyre, Kathleen M. Sidney, Cynthia Felice, Marta Randall, Ursula K. LeGuin, Gayle Netzer, Octavia E. Butler, Kathleen Sky, Kate Wilhelm, Doris Piserchia, Elinor Busby, and Pamela Sargent.
