Show Notes

In this podcast, The Outer Dark Virtual Symposium presents State of The Weird Roundtable 2020 featuring J.S. Breukelaar, Chesya Burke, Julie C. Day, Larissa Glasser, Orrin Grey, and Tonya Liburd. This dynamic no-holds-barred conversation centers on how Weird Fiction is more vibrant and alive than ever and accelerating  way beyond the legacy of HP Lovecraft and the gatekeepers who have marginalized and excluded  diverse authors. Or in other words, as groups that Lovecraft deemed Outsider increasingly become the narrator, the limits are blown away and  the supernatural often switches from enemy to savior. The roundtable’s participants discuss what they see as a Weird ‘shadow canon’ which brought them to Weird fiction via authors other than Lovecraft, how to re-frame Weird fiction discussions not to remove but to de-center HPL, the global reach of cosmic horror,  and lifting up the new authors driving the Weird Renaissance, as well as how to find these cutting edge new authors. Plus Larissa  Glasser (1:06:15)  reads from her work in progress ‘Princess of Rabies’,  and JS Breukelaar (1:14:56) reads from her new novel The Bridge, scheduled for a spring 2021 release from Meerkat Press. For background, please read Scott Nicolay’s essay ‘Changing the Narrative: The Weird Renaissance Belongs to Everyone’.  Listen to previous State of the Weird Roundtables: 2015/2016, 2017, 2018, 2019.
