Show Notes

In this podcast The Outer Dark presents the fourth installment of The Outer Dark Symposium on the Greater Weird 2019 beginning with readings by Jesse Bullington (0:41:36), Kyoko M  (0:50:27) and John Foster (0:58:14).  Then listen in to  the symposium’s fourth of five panels (1:08:17) ‘No Man’s Tale: Female, Binary & Queer Bodies in a Weird Space’, moderated by Larissa Glasser and featuring Laura Blackwell, Craig Laurance Gidney, Sunny Moraine, teri.zin/Zin E. Rocklyn, and Damien Angelica Walters. Shirley Jackson, Angela Carter, Tanith Lee, Alice Sheldon (James Tiptree, Jr.), Samuel R. Delany, Toni Morrison, and other authors charted the way, but The Weird Renaissance really amplified diversification away from predominantly white cis male authors and protagonists. How does The Weird narrative itself morph when women and LBGTQ characters are centered rather than marginalized, victimized, villainized, and/or treated as wish-fulfillment manic pixies? Is The Weird more adept than other literary modes to act as a transgressive tool to confront societal “othering” and body norm expectations? These segments were recorded live on Saturday March 23 at Silver Scream FX Lab in Atlanta, GA.
