This Is Horror

The Cutting Room. Resident Evil: The Final Chapter

Picking up immediately after the events in Resident Evil: Retribution, Final Chapter finds humanity on its last legs and Alice (Jovovich) must return to Raccoon City, where the Umbrella Corporation is preparing for a final strike against the survivors of the apocalypse.

In a race against time Alice will join forces with old friends, and an unlikely ally, in an action packed battle with undead hordes and new mutant monsters. Between losing her superhuman abilities and Umbrella’s impending attack, this will be Alice’s most difficult adventure as she fights to save humanity, which is on the brink of oblivion.

Why we’re looking forward to this: While the Resident Evil series has always polarised audiences, we here at This Is Horror have a soft spot for it with the rationale that you don’t always want steak for dinner, sometimes a burger will satisfy those hunger pangs.

We’re also aware that any movie that claims to be the final chapter invariably is anything but; witness Freddy’s Dead: The Final Nightmare, Friday 13th: The Final Chapter and Jason Goes To Hell: The Final Friday for just three examples. However, the Resident Evil films have always been enjoyable nonsense, and the second film, Apocalypse, is actually one of our favourite guilty pleasures, so the chance to mix it up once more with Alice, Claire Redfield and whichever of the other fan favourites that director Paul Anderson chooses to include, and face off against poorly CGI’d lickers, skinned dogs and other familiar nasties is one not to be missed.

Returning to Raccoon City where it all started, Resident Evil: The Final Chapter should at least deliver some familiar set pieces from the games (though on that score we lost interest after number 5) and provide an hour and a half of brain soothing entertainment if nothing else.

Resident Evil: The Final Chapter is due out in January 2016.
