Book Review: Clockwork Universe by John W. Dennehy

The reader is transported into a well formed, steampunk setting, complete with gas lamps, murder, and appropriate attire.”

Vicious creatures terrorize an alternate world, creations of a mad scientist, nearly unstoppable in their ferocity. Big game hunters come to the rescue but befriend an unlikely character, someone who is completely in awe of finding himself in such a strange place.

Kevin is a musician, and a fan of punk rock. While waiting for a train into Boston to book a gig for his band he meets a man on the platform. He chats with Kevin a bit about music and leaves suddenly, asking the punk rocker with a purple Mohawk to watch over his briefcase. The train arrives and Kevin brings the briefcase along, waiting for its owner to claim it. He shares a seat with a young woman and soon falls asleep aboard the train as it powers along the tracks in the present time and in our world. When he awakens he finds he has been transported into a Victorian era, steam punk version of Boston where the patriots lost the revolution. There he meets a big game hunter named Silas Cunningham and learns of the beasts ravaging the city. They are called Rhino-pards, being that they are a cross between a Rhinoceros and a leopard, and they are powerful predators to behold.

The reader is transported into a well formed, steampunk setting, complete with gas lamps, murder, and appropriate attire. The story flows nicely, adding in a good dose of action and some laughs along the way. Kevin and his companions not only have to battle the Rhino-pards on the loose but they also have to solve the mystery of who created them, which becomes a quite enjoyable story. It’s a short read, but holds the attention well and leaves the reader hoping to see more adventures involving the punk rocker and his new comrades.
