2013 FILM4 FrightFest Preview

frankensteins-armyIt’s that time of year again, folks. FILM4 FrightFest, now in its 14th year, returns to the heart of London’s West End for five days of gore-packed movies, signings, and personal appearances. This is the first time I’ve attended, and to say I’m excited would be like saying Usain Bolt’s a little bit nippy down that final straight. So what films am I looking forward to the most, I hear you (or the voices inside my head) ask? Well, let me tell you…

Frankenstein’s Army

Billed as a historical Hostel, Frankenstein’s Army features Nazis, mad scientists, and stitched together super-soldiers in the final days of World War II. Promising buckets of gore and more undead gunplay than Uwe Bolt’s entire back-catalogue, Frankenstein’s Army is already destined for cult status.

Curse of Chucky

After the much-maligned Seed of Chucky, it’ll be good to see everyone’s favourite copper-topped doll-cum-serial-killer return to his former, darker self. Curse of Chucky picks up where Child’s Play 3 left off, and joining the cast alongside Brad Dourif (returning as the voice of Chucky) is his daughter, Fiona Dourif, and Danielle Bisutti (Insidious: Chapter 2).

You’re Next

Adam Wingard’s furry home-invasion chiller, You’re Next, has been knocking around for ages, and finally gets a UK release. With a kick-ass female lead, pitch black comedy and more animal masks than an Eyes Wide Shut orgy, You’re Next promises to be one of the highlights of the entire weekend.

Willow Creek

The found-footage Bigfoot film from Bobcat Goldthwait (God Bless America) has been described as Harry and the Hendersons meets The Blair Witch Project. If this is half as good as God Bless America, then we’re all in for a treat.

Wither

A cabin-in-the-woods gorefest from Sweden, and a homage to Sam Raimi’s original Evil Dead, Wither guarantees decapitations, dismemberment, demonic possession, and all kinds of Swedish words put together to form coherent sentences. (In Swedish with English subtitles.)
