Show Notes

(00:37:45) Part One of the Outer Dark Symposium on the Greater Weird 2018, Saturday March 24 at Winchester Mystery House (San Jose, CA), begins with an introduction by Scott, Nathan Emmett of Winchester Mystery House,  and Producer Anya Martin. Then formal programming begins with a reading by David Bowles (00:44:09) and the first of four panels The House on the Borderlands/La Frontera” (01:01:37) was moderated by David Bowles and features Rios de la LuzCraig Laurance Gidney, Silvia Moreno-Garcia, Scott Nicolay, and Tiffany Scandal. Gloria Anzaldúa deployed the Nahua word/concept nepantla to describe the space and experience of in-between-ness. Author Daniel Jose Older has built on this work in his fiction to frame Brooklyn as a multicultural frontera capable not only of resisting the gentrifying monoculture of whiteness but also of defying its associated ontological boundaries, including such binaries as life/death, human/inhuman, and natural/unnatural. How far can The Weird run with this model, and can it do so without co-opting the roots of Anzaldúa’s thought in mestizaje, queerness, and feminism? The episode concludes with a reading byJohn Claude Smith (01:46:44).

Stay tuned for more of The Outer Dark Symposium 2018 in future episodes of The Outer Dark.
