The Cutting Room: Blair Witch

Blair Witch - 2016 - posterA group of college students venture into the Black Hills Forest in Maryland to uncover the mysteries surrounding the disappearance of James’ sister who many believe is connected to the legend of the Blair Witch. At first the group is hopeful, especially when pair of locals offer to act as guides through the dark and winding woods, but as the endless night wears on, the group is visited by a menacing presence. Slowly, they begin to realize the legend is all too real and more sinister than they could have imagined.

Why we’re looking forward to this: Way back in 1999 The Blair Witch Project took the horror world by storm, not only with it’s phenomenal financial success on a miniscule budget, but by effectively establishing the now done to death found footage trope. Seventeen years on we’ve finally got a decent sequel to it (forget about 2000’s dire Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2)

The fact that director Adam Winguard managed to keep he was making a sequel to this iconic movie under wraps, disguised as a low budget film called The Woods, is amazing and means that rather than have to wait an age to actually see his handiwork, it’s actually crept up on us more effectively than the Blair Witch herself could have done.

Blair Witch is out this weekend.
