Belinda Frisch

What first attracted you to horror writing?

I love the thrill of a pulse-pounding imaginary scare. I like the inherent danger and fast pace of horror, both as a reader and a writer, and I enjoy raising the stakes for my characters.

Dead Spell by Belinda FrischWhat is your most notable work?

My novel, Dead Spell, which released in March 2011

What are you working on now?

I’m a multi-tasker and have several novels in progress. The one I’m most excited about is a series based on Cure, a short story I wrote for Tales of the Zombie War.

Who do you admire in the horror world?

Joe Schreiber, the author of Eat the Dark, Chasing the Dead, and No Doors, No Windows. He’s written other and maybe more notable books including his Star Wars novel, Red Harvest, but it was Eat the Dark that really pushed me with my writing. He’s a master of efficient, fast-paced writing.

Do you prefer all out gore or psychological chills?

Psychological chills for sure. I’d prefer to imagine the worst than to see something that doesn’t quite live up to what I imagined. Haunted house stories are some of my favourite.

Why should people read your work?

The most important thing to me in my writing, besides delivering a good cringe or scare, is to form a connection between the reader and my often unconventionally likeable characters. I believe that any writing is much more powerful when the story feels like it’s happening to someone you know and care about.

Recommend a book.

An Apple for Zoe: The Forsaken, by Thomas Amo. Talk about a thrill ride!
