Midnight Mix-Tape: April 2017 – Haunted

Danvers State Hospital - exteriorUncle Jake’s here to hook you up with some of the latest and greatest horror short stories available online right now. Stories that will challenge, evolve, and redefine what horror is, and what it will become. These are themed mix-tapes of fear, dread, danger, and gore, lovingly curated just for your reading pleasure.

My grandma believed in ghosts. I remember wobbly sketches of a man with no legs in a brown suit, wearing a hat. When she showed me she pointed to the hallway of the house we were in and said, “He’s right there.” Before she passed away she drew more sketches of other visitors. She would talk about them–the Tall Man, the Girl with the Jump Rope–and point to her closet. “They just come out and see me all the time.”

I couldn’t see her ghosts, but it doesn’t mean I don’t have my own. We all do. Memories, heartaches, and even smells can haunt you and can creep in under your defenses, bringing with them both painful and beautiful pieces of our pasts. Ghosts are everywhere, for all of us, and it makes the world a far more powerful and interesting place.
