In his introduction, Joshi states how malleable he believes Lovecraftian fiction to be, how it can be twisted and shaped to explore our contemporary concerns. In particular, he stresses that just because Lovecraft was deficient when it came to characterisation and exploring his character’s inner life and relationship with society, it doesn’t mean that his literary descendants have to be. As such, the stories within the covers of Black Wings III are no tired re-treads of Lovecraft’s tropes, but instead use his themes as springboards for tales that are contemporary, imaginative pieces of weird fiction in their own right.
The series has been rebranded Black Wings Of Cthulhu (“absurdly” so, according to the editor himself) but don’t let that put you off. Whatever this third volume is called, it’s worthy of a place on any neo-Lovecraftian’s bookshelf.
